Rightly, it should be Sleepless in Seattle, Nora Ephron’s best movie, in my humble opinion. Harry? Sally? I love this movie’s sound track most of all. Sleepless is available this month on Amazon Prime. We watched it together last night. I’ve watched An Affair to Remember and recognize its emotional pull. Watching the ending of that movie tears at my heartstrings almost as much as the ending of that other classic movie, The Dirty Dozen. Like when, Jim Brown was throwing those hand grenades down those airshafts. 😉

Rogue Internet Cop
When cops go rogue it is a bad thing. It is also front page news. Fortunately for all of us that is a rare event. When there is a rogue Internet cop it is just a major pain in the ass. Let me set the scene for you. Late Wednesday night, like sometime after nine, when I went to bed, something happened to our computer. I woke up to this dreadful news on Thursday morning. I tried fixing the problem, mainly by repeatedly rebooting the machine, but to no avail and all too soon I toddled off to work. My parting wish was, “Maybe it will fix itself, while I’m at work.” “Fat chance”, I said to that wish and walked out the door.
I came home Thursday night, after spending all day bent over a hot keyboard at work. The last thing that I needed to deal with was computer problems. Maybe I should clarify what those problems were, because on the scale of such things my problems weren’t all that bad. The hardware seemed to be functioning just fine. All the software with the exception of Internet Explorer (IE) and McAfee seemed to be working just fine too. McAfee seemed to still be working, it just wasn’t very responsive, like at all. IE worked fine too, except with websites like our email, Facebook and this blog. Websites that had a login associated with them, websites that communicated securely. To make matters even more perplexing Google’s Chrome still worked with all of the offending sites.
I could have let things ride. I certainly have enough other things going on that I didn’t need to spend all night trouble shooting some esoteric PC problem. In fact, I had an easy workaround; I could just switch over to Chrome. But no, there was the principle of the matter. It was a case of man versus the machine, me versus it. Besides there could be some more sinister underlying issue.
My first attempt at fixing the problem was to engage my handy-dandy AT&T technician. I’ve had good luck with their tech support in the past. I figured a little old problem like this one would be a piece of cake. After spending the better part of an hour instant messaging with ‘Kurt’, he decided that my problem was not really an AT&T problem and told me to go bother Microsoft instead.
Left to fend for myself, I got to thinking that there had to be some connection between the secession of secure communications and the non-responsiveness of McAfee. I figured that if I just shut down McAfee, I could at least test this hypothesis. This was easier said then done. An Internet cop like McAfee doesn’t like to go quietly. I eventually figured out that I had to login to the McAfee website and deactivate my computer’s software there. Download their special uninstalling software and run that. That worked, but it took a while. Afterwards, I had to reactivate my computer’s account and then download and reinstall the McAfee software, which took even longer. In the end, I was successful, but it took all evening. I still wonder if it was really worth the effort. I guess that I should be happy that real life technological monsters are so mundane.
Aliens Land In Yellowstone
So I re-watched “Cowboys and Aliens”. I was so immensely disappointed with this movie, when it first came out. It boasted such luminaries as Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig. It even listed Steven Spielberg as a producer. On my re-watching it, I’ve lowered my expectations and was pleased with the result, just another western.
My Peeps
Lord Almighty I feel my temp’rature rising, Mmm
Higher and higher it’s burning through to my soul
Girl, girl, girl, girl, you’ve gone and set me on fire, Mmm
My brain is flamin’ I don’t know which way to go, yeh
Your kisses lift me higher like the sweet song of a choir
You light my morning sky with burning love, Mmm
I had way too much time on my hands on Sunday, so I made this movie. It stars a pair of heart-shaped peeps. Their heart shape embodies the universal symbol for love and what with Valentine’s Day occurring this week, now seems just the right time for making this movie. Although, I don’t know why they were purple instead of the traditional red. Maybe, they just need to be re-oxygenated?
In this movie you hear Anne and I discussing the unfolding events. Anne certainly feels some trepidation about the whole process, while I have no such qualms, because I had done my homework. I did clean the microwave afterwards. I really should have cleaned it beforehand, it would have made for a better movie, but I wasn’t 100% sure that it wouldn’t blow-up in the microwave and make a mess.
I’m just a hunka hunka burning love (Ha)
Just a hunka hunka burnin’ love (Ha) Ha
Just a hunka hunka burnin’ love (Ha)
A hunka hunka burnin’ love (Ha) Ha

Bite Me!
It’s the weekend! So, it is time for another fun Friday family news roundup. I’ll go first. In and around work today I attempted to re-title Dan’s car. It has been in LA so long that a Missouri registry is no longer tenable. Missouri’s Department of Revenue, what every other state calls the Department of Motor Vehicles, was its usual pointless purgatory. For one brief shining moment, I thought that I might skate free and clear of this process, but the doors all too quickly slammed shut and I was sent back to the beginning of this latest paper chase. Grrrr!
Speaking of Dan, he is working for the scenic designer on a movie. I neglected to ask him which movie and he hasn’t volunteered a title either, so maybe I don’t have a need to know? He did volunteer that it is a film that is mostly set in mid-century San Diego, with flashbacks to World War II, where the protagonist served in the Japanese army. Filming is in Orange County. Dan says that he is having fun doing this work, but he also finds it grueling. He works 12 and 14 hour days. So far he has made a pair of doors from scratch out of about the cheapest materials that exist. The film industry is apparently held together with contact paper, but next he’ll be carving an African mask.
There is not much to say about Dave. I texted him today, and asked for “proof of life” and got this brief response, “Still alive, just busy”. I guess that’s all I have to report.
Meanwhile, Anne has been feeling chilled, on the verge of feverishness and definitely has had a sore throat for a couple of days, so it goes to figure that she ended up working in plague central again, kindergarten. This morning, she was greeted by a chorus of sniffles and coughs and it only got worse from there. One child complained that she wasn’t feeling well. Anne sent her to the nurse. The nurse returned the child, saying that there was no sign of fever. A little while later the child threw up. The principal had to move Anne and her class to the library. On the playground, one child bit another, because she was crying and it hurt his ears. It was just that kind of day. Thank God it’s Friday!
End of the Year, Not the World
Three Mayans walk into a bar. They are all dour faced. Trying to cheer them up, the bartender says, “Come on guys, it’s not the end of the world.”
I worked a half-day today and now I am off for the rest of the year and shortly after I got home Dave made it home too, his overnight stay at a Motel 6 not withstanding. Rey arrived not too long afterwards. He is spending the night here on his way out to Colorado and his grandparent’s house. Anne worked until three and now too is off for the rest of the year. This was also her last day of teaching the fourth grade as a long-term substitute. She still has a little bit of grading yet to do and a boatload of Christmas booty. I picked her up after school and shuttled her to the doctor, so she could have the pins taken out of her hand. All-in-all it was a pretty good day.
The movie with this post was made with the iPhone app, Action Movie FX. Dan introduced me to it yesterday. It took top honors this year as the best app for the iPhone. The app is free and lets users shoot short scenes that are then enhanced with special effects such as falling rocks and vehicles and various missile attacks. That’s Anne’s car that gets blown-up in the movie. Does this mean I have to buy her a new one, to replace the one that I blew up?
