Between a Ditch and the Deep Blue Sea

Jason Standing Between a Ditch and the Deep Blue Sea

Pictured is one of our biking compatriots along a particularly bad section of road. Fiber was being laid and a trench had been dug down the middle of the road. This left us with only a narrow path, between this ditched and the sea below.. Too narrow for me. I lost control and rode across this ditch. Fortunately, my wheel crossed the ditch perpendicular and I did not fall in. This was near the end of yesterday’s ride, our penultimate day on this bike tour. Today, the final day of the tour was easier. It seems to meur guide seems to have resorted to euphemisms to sugarcoat our route. The most popular one was undulations of rolling hills. The next most popular one was inclination or a climb. We met both these descriptions with determination.

The Perfect Storm

Anne has a Bone to Pick

Big day, big ride. 60 klicks, about twice our normal distance. It was an out and back ride. The out part was a bit of a slough, with a big hill to climb. At the top of the hill Anne climbed out of the van and back onto her bike. Kind of a Rolls Canardly, rolls downhill, can hardly get up the next, kind of ride. Still she rode. Lunch, pictured, was by the seashore. Lunch was fabulous, truly fabulous. Of course after lunch, we had to climb back up that hill that we had just sailed down. To make it even more interesting, a storm was rolling in. Climbing Jacob’s Ladder, things soon turned into a race. Aimee on her analog bike became Uber woman. I on my e-bike sailed uphill. At times it seemed nippy and tuck, but we made it back to the hotel just before the dam broke. A little bit later a rainbow appeared.

Korcula

Korcula Island Wine Tasting View

Last night it was dark and stormy, but by morning all that had passed. This morning we drove back across the island to Hvar, where Anne had crashed the day before. We queued for a ferry to the next island, but that boat got cancelled due to the weather. That left the tour with two hours to kill to the next one. Yesterday in Hvar it was rainy, so we could not do anything, but today the weather was nice. Anne was not up to it, but most of us marched up the hill to see the fortress. The next boat arrived and whisked us across the lumpy water. We saw porpoises pacing the boat.

On Korcula, the ferry disruption shortened our bicycling time. Anne rode in the van, acting as our vanguard. This position gave her insight what the van driver thought of us, “Too slow.” in the evening we attended a wine tasting at a local vineyard. It was fabulous.

Crash!

Anne in Happier Times – Earlier Today

Yesterday, she lost her phone, only to have someone find it, answer the phone, come to us to return it and accept no reward. Today on the second day of our bike trip Anne crashed. Lots of scraps and bruises, No concussion and no broken bones (hopefully). Her guarding angel is working overtime on this trip.

This day’s ride featured a big hill, 1500 ft of elevation climbing. On my e-bike I made it easily. Cousin Amee made it too on her analog bike. Anne wisely sagged up the hill. At the top of the hill there was a coffee house, where the group gathered our wits together.

It was near the bottom of this hill that she crashed. An oncoming car spooked her, causing her to lock her brakes and skid out of control. She was probably about a mile from the end of the day. It had started to rain on the way down. Weather probably contributed to the accident.
