It is another Red October in Saint Louis. MLB’s post season is again upon us and the Saint Louis Cardinals are once again, almost perennially so, in post season play. Busch Stadium and the Cardinals were once billed as America’s family friendly ballpark and baseball team. The movie “Parenthood” epitomized this myth. That was 1989 though and things are different now. In the intervening years, each Redbird playoff series success has also resulted in another hopeful city’s disappointment. Over the years our list of disappointed, defeated and jealous rivals has added up. Every time we crush another city’s playoff hopes, we create a new enemy. Saint Louis has been very successful in this and I think it is time we embrace this new reality, we are the new villains of baseball, replacing those damn Yankees. Revel in it Cards fans!
Our next intended victim, is our near north neighbors, the Chicago Cubs. These baby bears have not been nearly as successful as the Birds as of late. In fact, the last time the Cubs won the World Series the Ottoman Empire was still a going concern. I guess that makes them the underdogs and everyone else’s favorite and us the perfect foil, the perfect villain. Come Friday night, only true Cardinal fans will be rooting for Saint Louis. Let’s play ball!
