We had our annual block party last night and since our street is only one block long, everyone that lives on the street was invited. Normally, this party is held at the bottom of the street, but this year its location was switched to the top. Another change this year was that the residents of the upper cross street were also invited, which was a nice touch. Susan acted again as block captain and did her usual fine job. It was a perfect night for a potluck. Our suburban municipality sponsors our block parties that coincide with one of the national neighborhood nights out. The other one is in August and is frequently too warm in Saint Louis. Our city provided brats and hot dogs and blocked off the street. A fire engine showed up for the kids and a police captain arrived later for some community outreach. Mainly, it was an opportunity to meet the neighbors and catch-up on local gossip and news:
- Ours was one of 17 block parties held that night
- Condos are to be built replacing the old AB Green school
- IKEA considered building its store next to the Heights
- Our longtime neighbor Cathie plans to move next year
- All our city police officers are college grads
- We were the first town in Missouri to require this
- All four neighborhood burglars have been identified
- Not all of them have been caught yet though
