Old Engineers on the Move

Nuttall’s White-crowned Sparrow at Point Lobos

I will receive a hundred-dollar gift card for participating in what I’ll refer to as the company’s plan to keep old engineers moving. This is an annual exercise that I participated in during the summer. I chose the gift card from the Sports Authority, mainly because there is one near by the house. I would have been happier with a bike store, or even REI, but don’t look a gift horse in the mouth I always say. There were no food options on the list, I guess that would have been counter-productive to the spirit of the program. Anne suggested that I get a yoga mat, so I can join her in yoga class. Yeah, right. I can just hear my fellow engineers now, “So Mark, what did you buy with your gift card?” What do you mean you can’t say?” “Hey, I bet you bought a yoga mat. That’s right, huh? Fess-up now, we all know you did.”

Party Balloon

California’s Hanger 1 Vodka Blimp

I had cake and ice cream at work today for my 20th anniversary. It was a low-key affair, still about forty friends turned out to wish me well and of course to eat some cake. I joked that it had taken me 32 years to get my twenty years in. I moved to Saint Louis in 1980 and consulted until 1990, when I actually hired in direct. Then in 1999, I went walk-about for a couple of years, before finally returning. I told everyone that I don’t plan on working another 32 years, I don’t even plan on working another twenty. I’m more in the single digit frame of mind now. I certainly want to hang around for my 25th, because then I not only get dessert, but I also get lunch too.

Seagulls on the Rocks

Seagulls on the Rocks at the End of the Beach

This week I had a major breakthrough at work. It wasn’t really a breakthrough and only from my small vantage point could the words ‘major’ or ‘breakthrough’ become involved in the discussion. This was on Monday morning and I basked in the glow of my so-called success all day. At day’s end when Anne and I compared our respective days, I finally had something positive that I couldn’t talk about.

I had to brief management immediately after my noontime walk. Monday’s weather was steaming, so I was positively melting when I did the brief. That probably helped prevent them inspecting my results too closely. They had to look over my shoulder to see the screen. Afterwards, in the cafeteria, with piece of pizza in hand, one of the managers saddled up behind me and asked to the effect, had I already worked that piece of pizza off. Of course not.

I don’t feel that I can can really claim credit for any success here. Primarily, because I can’t explain it. It is like the bluebird of happiness had landed on my shoulder. I felt blessed. I have benefited from such luck in the past and I could try to exercise this luck again here, but like George Jetson before me, I had somewhat mindlessly just punched some buttons and like a lucky slot machine gambler come out a winner. This experience reminds me of Arther C. Clarke’s Third Law: ‘Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.’ I’m just one lucky gull.

Old Friends are the Best Friends

HI

Maybe long time friends would have been a more politic title? The first venerable friend, David, commented on this blog earlier today. The second friend of long acquaintance, Terry, showed up at a meeting I attended this morning.

Initially, I confused David with another friend of many years, Captain Don. David had signed his comment “D” and referenced a West County intersection in his comment. It wasn’t until later, when I put two-and-two together that I finally figured out who “D” was.

I was surprised to see Terry, when I walked into the conference room, The meeting was a procedural meeting. By procedural, I mean boring. The first words that I said to Terry after not having seen him for several years was, “I thought that you had retired.” Not a very politic statement at all, especially since I had uttered it in front of a dozen witnesses. After the procedure was performed and the meeting had broken up, Terry and I commenced to start catching up on each other.

I had not heard nor seen either of these two gentlemen for more than a few years. It is a splendid coincidence that our re-acquaintances all occurred on the same day. The photo with this post says it all, “HI”. It is another example of my painting with light on the beach this summer.

The Grass Is always Greener

Succulent

I mowed the lawn this evening. It was the first time that I had mowed the lawn in over a month. So it really needed it. A month is a long time to go without mowing, but somewhat fortunately, May was an almost bone dry month. The lawn tonight, before I began didn’t look that much taller than when I returned from California, almost two weeks ago. It did look stragglier, but it hadn’t grown any more.

I couldn’t even contemplate mowing the lawn last week. It was all that I could do to drag myself into work the last two days of the work week and then back home again. I was going to mow it last weekend, but pleasure activities got in the way. Chinese lanterns and Shakespeare at night and bicycling by day filled our weekend up. I was going to mow the lawn on Monday, but our first rain in a month precluded that idea. It was a good summer downpour. Tuesday night was all about the transit of Venus, so there was no chance of mowing that night either. I guess that my only excuse for Wednesday is this, I had biked in the morning both Monday and Tuesday mornings and I was too tired to mow the lawn that night. I did not bicycle this morning, so I had no such excuse. Besides, Anne has been working so hard on repainting the bathroom, I felt shamed not to contribute in some way to the maintenance of the homeland. She has been one scrappy scraper this week.

I’ve mowed my share of lawns in my day. I started mowing the family lawn in junior high. That quickly branched out into a business of lawn mowing. We were living in a Maryland suburb of Washington and business was pretty good. I charge $4 to mow or $5 if you wanted the grass bagged. I didn’t trim and I didn’t do windows. I also discouraged bagging. It took too long. This was at the tail end of the sixties, so $4 or $5 dollars went a lot further back then. Gas was probably near $0.25 back then. Food, my other fuel, was even cheaper, it was free to me. Once I got going, I bought my own mower. It was the ugliest shade of green, but it was self-propelled and I called it the ‘tank’. It weighed a ton and for being ‘self-propelled’ didn’t always carry its weight.

When we moved to Michigan, I was old enough to take on real employment. I worked for apartment complexes, mainly doing mowing. This continued through most of college. After graduation, I got a real job and worked that. Eventually, we bought a house and that house had a lawn. It just so happens that that lawn was the same one that I mowed tonight.

The following list is just a few of the hundreds of email messages that were waiting for me the other day at work. I’ve highlighted some of the more interesting ones. A little bird once told me that it is better to blog out your message rather than email spam everyone you know and then some.

  • Please STOP using reply to all
  • You have the wrong person.
