Colorado River in Glen Canyon

Colorado River in Glen Canyon

Dorothy: Toto, I don’t think that we’re in Kansas anymore. Toto: Of course we are, can’t you see the tornado? We traded yesterday’s western Colorado for today’s western Kansas and the Central time zone, but by tomorrow, we will be home. Today, was a long day of driving through the mountains. We started driving earlier than normal and continued driving later than normal, all without accumulating that much extra milage. I blame the mountains, instead of the flatlanders doing the driving. Most of the day the posted speed limit was 75 mph. Except in the flats, we never did that. We did dawdle half-an-hour at the Grizzley Creek rest stop in Glen Canyon. This is the same place that two days ago had closed I-70 for flash floods. Very pretty. Later, we climbed to 12K feet at the Eisenhower tunnels just west of Denver. Approaching the tunnels both engine and passengers were panting heavily. Afterwards, I engine braked 40+ miles to Denver, shedding 7K feet. Even old flatlanders can learn a new trick. On the way down, Anne spied a flashing LED sign warning truckers without brakes not to exit the highway… The first exit ramp led straight into a gas station. She interpreted the rest of the message as, just run it out to Kansas, as best you can. Which is pretty much what we did sans the brake issues.
