Atmospheric Rivers

Monterey Fog

The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco — Mark Twain

This week an atmospheric river struck California. SoCal was the most affected, what with a lot of rain falling there, often the equivalent of an area’s entire annual rainfall amount fell in a mere twenty-four hours. Flooding was pervasive. The rest of California was also affected. The Sierras saw snowfall measured in feet.

My Dad and brother Chris were also affected. On Monday, high winds knocked out their power. They also knocked out a window. The old photo above shows the western side of the house. The window that blew out (not in) is the skylight pictured on the upper right side, the master bedroom. They got a man out to put up plastic over the opening right away. The window was double paned and one of the panes fell without breaking. This will aid fabricating a new one.

Most of this week’s drama revolved around the power outage, which was not restored until yesterday, after four days. I have included the Mark Twain quote, even though my family lives in Monterey and not San Francisco, because both locales share similar weather. February in not summertime either. Without power, the house got very cold. It was a trial, but they persevered and rode out the storm’s aftereffects. All of neighboring Pebble Beach is still without power.
