Cardinals Pennant Hopes

Saint Louis Cardinals Pennant

Saint Louis Cardinals Pennant

Astute readers will notice that I’ve begun the Saint Louis Cardinals magic number countdown. I noticed that the paper had started doing this, so I figured that it wasn’t too soon for me to do the same. As of writing their magic number stands at ten. That means any combination of Redbird victories and Pittsburgh Pirates losses will clinch the National League Central Division for Saint Louis. I should caveat that statement. Currently the Pirates are in second place, while the Chicago Cubs are a close third. It could occur that the Cubs overtake the Pirates and in such a case the magic number would transfer over to Cub losses instead of Pirates. This could happen, because the Cubs and Pirates begin a three game series tonight and they are only two games apart. Currently, the Cards, Pirates and the Cubs have the first, second and third best records in baseball. The Cubs are also tied with the Kansas City Royals record, who have the best record in the American League. The Cards have already clinched a wildcard spot, so they are in the playoff no matter what, but since they have been leading the division, the league and all of baseball for almost all of this year, it would be a shame if they had to settle for less. GO CARDS!
