Today is Bike to Work Day and Anne, but not me, biked to work. Well school really, but it still counts. Not much longer though, because Anne only has four more school days left before school’s out for summer and she might be able to skip some of those days. She has been doing high school chemistry all week, while Mrs. Dwyer, the best teacher in the district IMHO, had been leading a field trip to LA. Earlier this week she was telling me over dinner how one of the classes had tried to pull a fast one over on her and get double lunches. Because the cafeteria is not big enough to handle all the students at one time, the school has first lunch and second lunch. I was only half listening and only heard, “first lunch and second lunch” and asked, “What are you guys, a bunch of hobbits?” Anne was having none of this and told the students that she had been teaching in this school way too long to fall for that trick. Then she went on to relate a similar story from her high school days, when she and her class had tried and succeeded in pulling off that very same trick on an inexperienced substitute. Today was Field Day in the high school. The kids spent the afternoon playing outdoor games and sports, but the teachers had decided that it was too cold for any of them to take a turn in the dunking booth.
