“Shadow Play”, by Carol Lovelace was a quilt in the Circle in the Square quilt show that we saw last month. Ms. Lovelace portrays her ginkgo leaves as iridescent and translucent petals. She gives their shadows more substance than the leaves themselves. These effects combine to make the leaves appear to hover above the quilt’s surface. For contrast, I’ve included a photo of some fallen ginkgo leaves from the park. The photograph just doesn’t capture the magic of the quilt.
Regen to Axe: What’s really neat about the shadows on the quilt is that she placed and weighted the ginko leaves on the black fabric then splattered bleach across the fabric to change the background color and texture. The embroidered/quilted leaves are then free to steal the show.
