First, thank you Jane for steering us to this museum. It was great and we both really enjoyed it. But…
Located on the northern edge of Toronto, on the edge of the woods that run north from there, sits this art museum, McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Originally formed to honor seven artists, who are all dead now who were all white and whose names escape me, its collection has been much updated.
Thank goodness!
The original seven painted in a style that I have seen in every Canadian art museum that I have visited. Lots of vistas, with empty landscapes galore, but nary a human to be seen. You would think that no one lives in Canada. It is fortunate that native Americans Canadians or First Nations members as they prefer to be called more than fills this void. I would say that most of the art on display was created by these artists, as opposed to the original seven for which McMichael was formed. For the most part not being dead, really lends to the vitality of their work.
The museum’s setting is great! Almost every gallery had a fourth dedicated to floor to ceiling picture windows that lookout on the surrounding grounds. This makes the woods part of the experience. After we toured the museum and had lunch, we toured the grounds outside. It had gotten hot by then. Still, we saw the cemetery where the fab four six of the seven are buried and some outdoor art.
