Winter storm Fern is coming to town and should arrive by Saturday. I have been following the forecasted progress of this latest storm of the century, this storm literally of biblical proportions. This morning at sunrise I spied another sign of its imminent approach when at dawn the eastern sky was lit a brilliant oranges’ red. I have heard the adages “red sky at morn, sailor take warn” and conversely “red sky at night, sailor’s delight,” and wondered what they meant and where they came from. The red color comes from particulates suspended in the atmosphere of a stable high-pressure system. Such highs are usually followed by a low-pressure system. Lows mean storms. Hence the sailor take warn. The oldest reference to this meteorological phenomenon is in the Bible (Matthew 16:2-3). So, while Fern might not be quite Old Testament wrath-of-God type stuff, but it is close enough for me. Evidence of the effects of this wrath were evident at the grocery store today, two full days before it is slated to hit. The minions were pushing their shopping carts from aisle-to-aisle, desperately gathering foodstuffs for the coming apocalypse.
