Smoke on the Water

The Lubie Shrouded in Smoke

Smoke from wildfires in the Canadian west has been endemic this summer. The smoke gives the lake a hazy look and me a tickle in my throat. In the past such fires have led to great sunsets, but not so much this summer. Today, Britt and Melody arrive. Both of them are flying in from NYC to Chippawa International Airport, gate one-and-only, but on different flights. That will bring the cabin’s population up to five. Yesterday, there were some changes in where the rest of the planned guests will be staying. Aimee, Robyn and his family will not be staying with us but instead will stay at another cabin down the beach. In their stead we have picked up Jane. Victoria from Saint Louis is expected to fly in this weekend too. So, in the end, we will end up with seven people, instead of the previously expected eleven. Still, a respectable number.

The realtor is expecting to list the house in Monterey today. He was putting the finishing touches in place yesterday. Today or tomorrow, he will hold an open house for all of his realtor buddies and then Saturday and Sunday, he will show the house to the public. Hopefully, by Monday, we will have an offer or two.

The neighbors are holding a wedding tomorrow. There is now a big white tent at that end of the beach. The rehearsal dinner must be tonight. They are holding that event on the old ore boat, now a museum, the Valley Camp. They reserved a food truck to cater that event. We are not invited, but we’ll have our Nocs ready.

With all of this going on, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is hosting a memorial swim, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Relay teams of swimmers will swim from the wreck site in Lake Superior, south to Detroit, completing the 400+ mile ill-fated journey that the boat never finished. They started last week on the Canadian side of the lake, swam to Whitefish Point, site of the museum and then onto nearby Point Iroquois Lighthouse. Today, they swam past the cabin and into the Soo. With everything that is going on, I missed their passing. Too bad, because today the smoke is not that bad. This weekend, the Trans-Superior race starts. Yesterday, Dan launched his catamaran, so now he is ready participate in this race or simply to entertain his friends while at the lake.
