That’s a lot of Guano

Cormorant Rookery on Bird Island

When we went to Point Lobos, our turnaround point was Bird Island. As its name implies, it is a rookery, for some pelicans, but mainly cormorants. Other species also nest there too. We could smell their guano from the nearby parking lot. According to a park ranger, come summer, it can be smelled a mile away. The cormorants are not very good nest builders. Using seaweed, they will put a frond down that will likely as not immediately blow away in the wind. Even if it does not blow away, it is not much of a nest. Less senior birds who are resigned to nest at the cliff’s edge could very likely have their eggs roll away. It is a good thing that there are so many of them.
