Westward, Ho!

Daniel Boone Escorting Settlers through the Cumberland Gap, George Caleb Bingham, 1851

We left DC this morning, but first we had to find where we had parked the car. Dude, where’s my car? Finding said vehicle, we headed northwest out of town. Fighting miles and miles of traffic. Outside the Washington environs, we found I-68, a new to us interstate. It was lightly trafficked, with even fewer trucks than normal. It took us first into and then over the Appalachian Mountains, almost to Ohio, where we are staying tonight. It took us through Cumberland, MD. Where we viewed a distinctive gap in the mountains that I first took as the Cumberland Gap, but that ancient passageway is further south. The above Bingham painting is in honor of that mistake. This painting once adorned the cover of my middle school history text and still holds sway over me. Anyway, we are technically in the Midwest again and tomorrow have an easy drive to home.
