The MTA + MFA

Did She Ever Return?

These are the times that try men’s souls! In the course of our nation’s history the people of Boston have rallied bravely, whenever the rights of men have been threatened. Today a new crisis has arisen, the Metropolitan Transit Authority, better known as the MTA, is attempting to levy a burdensome tax on the population in the form of a subway fare increase. Citizens, hear me out, this could happen to you!

Well, let me tell you of the story of a man named Charlie
On a tragic and fateful day
He put ten cents in his pocket, kissed his wife and family
Went to ride on the MTA

Well, did he ever return?
No, he never returned, and his fate is still unlearned (What a pity)
He may ride forever ‘neath the streets of Boston
And he’s the man who never returned

Because of a fare increase that seemingly occurred while Charlie was riding the train and the fact that he had only brought exact change, Charlie is now stuck on the MTA. This song was first performed by the Kingston Trio in the Sixties. Since then, the price of the MTA has only risen much higher. Since the pandemic, everything is cashless now, so without checking my credit card statement, I couldn’t tell you how much our fare was. Before you board the train, you buy a Charlie card and then swipe that while going through the turnstile.

Our destination for taking the MTA was the MFA or the Museum of Fine Arts. We went to see the new Georgia O’Keeffe show (with Henry Moore). We ate lunch there and saw numerous other exhibits in the museum and then trooped back to the T and returned home. Yes, we returned, we really returned.

Pelvis IV, Georgia O’Keeffe, 1944
