Yesterday, we met with our financial advisor. The outcome of this meeting is that we are fiscally fit and look prepared to weather future financial storms. Then we visited nearby Faust Park, home of the botanical garden’s butterfly house, but the other Election Day storm had knocked it out. 8″ of rain had flooded the building’s basement, ruining its complicated HVAC system. No word yet on how long it will take to repair the damage. “Is there an entomologist in the house?” Next-door, the 1920 Dentzel carousel was open, if not being used, at least when we arrived. First installed at the Highlands amusement park near present day Forest Park, it eventually ended up in Faust Park. The nice old man who was operating it was asked, “Have you lived in Saint Louis your whole life?” He answered, “I don’t know, but I have so far.” Next, we walked the grounds of Thornhill, the plantation of Frederick Bates, second Missouri governor. Faust Park also hosts a village of locally relocated historic buildings.
The Forest Park Highlands was a great amusement park; we always had a lot of fun there on our annual elementary school picnics. Sadly it burned down in 1963 after a fire started in the kitchen. Forest Park Community College was built on the former Highlands grounds. I don’t know the details but the Faust Park Carousel was found, restored and put in Faust Park.
