Yesterday, we spent a lovely evening listening to music in the park. We walked across the street to Oak Knoll Park, where a local band (Madison County) was performing zydeco music. It was a warm, but not unpleasant evening. As we prepare for our upcoming bicycle tour, their music and the lyrics to their songs reminded me of our last bike tour, Cycle Zydeco, way down south in Louisiana’s Cajun country. At this concert were another reminder of that trip, our friends and neighbors Phil and Mary, who talked us into going there then, with the ride’s motto, “ride all day and dance all night.” A family emergency caused them to backout at the last moment, but we still had a good time. Perhaps a better motto might have been that of a joke I heard, “In England they drive on the left side of the road, here in Louisiana we ride on what’s left of the road.” Pavement quality aside, it was an interesting tour. Returning to last night’s festivities, the band seemed to get a little frustrated trying to get the crowd up and dancing. They had way more success with the children. Those little mudbugs took over the dance floor and mobbed the two stone turtles that flanked it. Fortunately, none of them ever ended up in the water. Their helicopter parents had a lot to do with that.
