Elkhorn Slough

Cotillion of Terns

Anne and I have been to Elkhorn Slough, but always before by hiking to it from its landward side. This time we sailed up it from the sea. We rode with Elkhorn Slough Safari, a cruise outfitter that operates out of Moss Landing, in the center of the coastline along Monterey Bay. Their pontoon boat doesn’t look like much, compared with some of the other whale watching cruises that also operate out of the harbor, but its shallow draft is well suited to the inland waters. Our official count by the end of the tour was almost 40 different bird species, 80+ harbor seals, 90+ sea otters, 100s of sea lions and I shot photos of them all.
