Gateway Arch

Gateway Arch, Bryan Haynes

Above, Bryan Hayes captures the dream that is the Gateway Arch. Below is a photograph of Saint Louis, taken sometime before demolition for construction of the Arch began in 1939. Between when the lofty dream was realized in 1965, when the Arch was completed and grim reality 26 years passed, which seems a long time to have to hold onto a dream. Both pictures were at the Old Courthouse, which appears in the second from the left, column of blocks. Its dome is visible. The caption on that photograph said that the Old Courthouse building was one of only two buildings in the picture that are still standing. I’m guessing that the other building is the Wainwright Building, which would be one block to the right and two blocks further back.
