Gum Drop (off) Tree

Saturday night Anne and I went to a charity trivia contest that was held to raise money for the YMCA.  Sandi and Chris had invited us along with Don and DJ, all Team Kaldi’s members.  Five more people rounded out our table.  There were ten rounds of ten questions each.  By the end of the evening we were sitting way down in the pack, with little better than half of the questions right.  Saving some face, we did better in the literature round then we did in the television round.

Sunday morning Anne and I went for a walk.  We walked down Wydown Boulevard, the way we normally ride to the Park.  As we walked by Wydown Middle School, we found the “Gum Drop” tree, pictured to the left.  Apparently, all the middle school students like to deposit their gum in the creases of this one tree’s bark.  They are probably not allowed to have gum in school, so I figure they press it into this tree’s bark on their way into school every morning.

Another interesting sight at Wydown Middle School is their diagram of the solar system.  Starting from the Sun and working its way down the sidewalk are the names of the planets.  The planet’s names are spaced along the sidewalk at a distance proportional to their relative distance from the Sun.  Out to Saturn the planets went by quickly, as we continued walking, but first Uranus and then Neptune seemed to take longer to arrive then expected.  We turned off Wydown, before seeing Pluto.  So we don’t know if it was included in this diagram or not.

We stopped off for breakfast at My Daddy’s Cheesecake.  Returning home we spied the juvenile Cooper’s hawk, pictured below, only a block from the house.  It was hanging out in the local tributary of Deer Creek that runs through the neighborhood.  We walked four miles.  Today’s header features a Carolina Wren.  It was supping at our feeders.

We spent the rest of the day rummaging through old photographs and watching football.  It was a great trip down memory lane.  We found some pretty good moldy oldies, as you all will see.  The Vikings won, but the Chargers lost.  I know that my brother Frank and Cornelius will both be disappointed.  😥
