Monterey Bay Aquarium

On Monday afternoon I visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I had tried to tide pool before I went to the aquarium, but even though it was low tide I didn’t really see very much, no starfish anyway. Part of the problem was that I was a little leery of hopping around on wet and slippery, rocking rocks.

After I found a parking place close to the aquarium and then found a bill changer to get quarters to feed the parking meter, I went to the aquarium. It was mid-afternoon and the aquarium was packed. The place was overrun with children.

In my humble opinion the forte of the Monterey Bay Aquarium is their invertebrate collection. The apex of this collection is the aquarium’s jellyfish collection. The pictures with this post highlight these attributes.

The remaining picture, the only fish picture, shows sardines. At one time, early in the twentieth century sardines were king in Monterey. John Steinbeck wrote Cannery Row after having worked in one of the Monterey’s sardine canneries. The Monterey Bay Aquarium was built on the remains of just one such cannery. The area of Monterey that the aquarium is located in is know as Cannery Row.

The sardines were fished out of Monterey Bay, just like the mackerel before them. When the sardine population crashed, the canneries soon followed. The sardine population is only now returning. Nowadays, the fisherman of Monterey Bay fish for squid. From my folks house you can see the fishing fleet at night. The fleet of about twenty boats lines-up side-by-side, in two parallel rows, with about a football field between the two rows. The boats all shine lights into the intervening space. The bright lights attract the squids to the surface. Once enough squid are there, the fishermen pull in their nets.

Monterey Bay Aquarium

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is the best aquarium that I have seen, in my humble opinion. I’ve been to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. It is certainly the best aquarium in the Midwest. The New England Aquarium in Boston is impressive, with its four-story ocean tank.  Seattle has a nice aquarium and San Diego has Seaworld.  I haven’t been to the National Aquarium in Baltimore, but really now, even Saint Louis has a better zoo than the National Zoo.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium has a wide and varied collection of jellyfish. The backlit picture of them with this post is indicative of the aquarium’s displays. My mom once arranged for a behind the scenes tour of the aquarium. I can still remember peering down into the dark waters of the large outer bay tank. Leaning over, all the while knowing the contents of the tank below.

Pooh and Kayak women have been going back and forth about KW’s new kitchen tile work plans.  Anne asked me to dig up a picture of the tile work in my parent’s guest bathroom.  The picture to the left shows a bit of  the bathroom’s counter top.  It is both bright and colorful.

After Sunday’s visit to the gardens, Anne and I sat down and watch the football playoff games.  We didn’t really care much either way about the Colts-Jets game, but we were disappointed to see the Vikings Brett Favre loose to the Saints.  We were rooting the old guy.  I don’t know who we will root for in the Superbowl, but I guess we have two weeks to decide.

Monday morning dawned all too early and while I was getting ready for work, I was grousing.  I was going back to work after only a one-day weekend and Anne was getting ready to enjoy her third day of weekend.  Then the phone rang.  It was the substitute scheduler, calling unusually late.   Anne had work for the day and I secretly felt better.  I hope that she doesn’t read this.  😉

Monday night on the way home from work, I swung by Ron’s place for some pizza and blog advice.  Ron supplied the pizza and I supplied the advice.  Ron’s blog is in my links, but here it is again.  I think that I got the better part of that deal.  Speaking of blog advice, I got a nice comment from Slam-Dunk on Monday.  Ron, check out his blog.  He seems to be doing this blogging thing better than me.
