Ruination Day

Burn It Down

Yesterday, the Orange Turd rolled-out his so-called Liberation Day that jacked-up tariffs worldwide to stratospheric levels. Today, Rudy Giuliani (Remember Rudy? 🤔) rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange and markets promptly cratered. Indexes are now in correction territory, signaling a recession. Having successfully wrecked the economy, DonOld looked around and said this is good. With his work done, he took the rest of the week off for golf.

Wall Street is not the economy, but I think that here, Wall Street is showing us where Main Street is headed. Predictions for a recession have risen, and a recession means layoffs. Are we left now to simply watch prices rise and then our economy falls? Interesting strategy there: if the price for everything else rises so high, will that mute the complaints about egg prices? You know the high prices that he was going to fix on day one. As prices spiral up, up, up and we in turn spiral, down, down, down what is to be done? Liberation Day now seems perfectly calculated to liberate us from our money. It is a good thing that we still have the social safety net…

Hold on though. Wait a minute.

Last night the Senate showed us a path forward, when four Republican Senators joined all of the Democrats and voted to halt the Canadian tariffs, one of the first tariffs imposed. Reviewing my eighth-grade civics lessons, I recall now that the executive branch has no power to level taxes and tariffs are taxes. That is exclusively the providence of Congress. This current brouhaha occurred because Trump declared this an economic emergency. Taking advantage of this emergency provision, he is allowed to raise tariffs. Up until Congress says, no, there is no emergency. That is what the Senate did last night. Now, if the House could be cajoled into doing the same thing, then no more tariffs. Fini! There is no vetoing allowed. Now getting the House to play ball, is no small feat, but the Senate has always been the more stubborn body of the two, so I am hopeful.Ā
