Detritus of History

Paleo LA

Yesterday, I headed down a rabbit hole, looking for an old photo that I had posted years ago. I eventually found it, but on this journey, I discovered so much more. For instance, this picture that Dan took while he was living in LA. At the time, he was living downtown, in an apartment that was Skid Row adjacent. Walking at night, he came upon this mastodon skull seemingly abandoned in a trash strewn alley.

It was a mystery to him how it had come to be there. Was this skull an escapee from the La Brea Tar Pits? Rediscovering this pic, I was unsure whether it was a mammoth or mastodon skull. Google answered that question and so much more. One of the matching photos found was this same view down the alleyway. This matching photograph was from a YouTube video by Calder Greenwood the self-proclaimed Cardboard Artist. In this short movie, it shows Greenwood attaching the tusks in this alley. The film goes on to talk about his work and it basically self-promotes him. In the years since, he has progressed beyond making street art and now works in movies. Hey, its LA.
