She Turned Me into a Newt

All the Flowers Are for Me, Anila Quayyum Agha, 2015

Another day, another art museum. This time it was the Peabody Essex in Salem. Yes, that Salem, home of the infamous witch trials. The museum had an exhibit on the witch trials and a somewhat related one on mediums, spirituality and the like, but for the most part, it was a regular art museum. The witch trial exhibit only emphasized what a tawdry affair the whole thing was. So many innocent women were needlessly hung. Mainly due to awful neighbors. There were other exhibits from all around the world. A center point to the museum was a two-century old rural Chinese house that had been disassembled in China, shipped to Salem whole and then reassembled. It was like a two-story apartment building that we were allowed to climb about in. My favorite artwork, we found late in the day. It is pictured above. The black metal cube weighs 600 pounds. It and its shadows fill the very large room where it is displayed. OBTW, I got better.

  1. I saw this art piece years ago at the Toledo Museum of Art. And several others by the same artist – very cool.
