Chestnuts from the Balkans

There maybe no “I” in team, but there is also no “W” in Croatian. Anne is really getting into learning language. Yesterday, she said hello in Croatian to a woman passerby, who answered her back. She was so pleased with her new found eloquence. It looks like the snafu with our room was resolved satisfactorily. It is always better to be lucky than good.

Today’s outing was to Trojir, a medieval town north of Split that is also a Unesco site. Yesterday, we walked to the ancient boundary between Trojir and Split. It was marked by a column. Today, we took the bus, which was no problem to ride and took credit cards. Trojir is a small island city. Its streets are a maze. They are paved with stones that are so old that centuries of footsteps have worn them flat, smooth and slick.

We spent a good deal of time exploring the castle in Trojir. It was somewhat worse for wear having seen action as late as WW II. We climbed to the top and were glad for our short stature, because one taller tourist banged his head and suffered a “battlement” wound.
