Yesterday, Anne and I attended a talk at the Soo library. This talk was given by Vice Admiral Sandra Stosz, USCG (ret), who was in town, in part for Engineer’s Day. She is also doing a book tour, hence Saturday’s talk. The book, her autobiography is entitled Breaking Ice & Breaking Glass and subtitled Leading in Uncharted Waters. She had returned to the Soo, where she had held her first command, the icebreaker Katmai Bay, which had been home ported here. In her talk and though her book Sandy, as she introduced herself, described the role of the Coast Guard and her long career in it, much of which involved working with ice breakers, hence the breaking ice portion of the book’s title. Her career also featured her role as a woman breaking many a glass ceiling while serving in the military. I found her talk both very moving and inspirational. Anne bought a copy of her book and plans on proposing it for a book club read this summer.
