Making Christmas

Doe Rae Mi La So F-ing Tired

Dan blew into town this weekend. He’s been on an epic multi-city, multi-week business trip. Friends’ wedding caused his divert home. He is a sub-contractor to Macy’s and likes to characterize his job as “making Christmas.”

His job is as a wood worker combining creativity, attention to detail and skills operating computerized machinery. On the job, his work days are varied, but as the holidays draw ever closer, they have also drawn ever longer.

For months in NYC he worked to help craft the department store’s Christmas windows. On the road, he has been installing the Christmas windows, cascading through Chicago and Philly and he leaves Saint Louis tonight for Washington.

Dan signed an NDA, so I dare not share too much more. He is more passionate about this job than any of his others. He was brought on as seasonal help, but hopes to parley his efforts into a more permanent position. There is always teardown after the holidays are over.
