On the eve of today’s snowpocalypse, we drove up to the Riverlands for a little birding. We ran into Eagle Days there, an annual celebration of the Bald eagle’s regular winter migration to our area. There was quite a crowd there, with lots of activities going on and a few eagles too. After a while, we decided to go to Illinois. More specifically, Mel Price. They too were doing Eagle Days. They also had two active eagle nests. We managed to latch onto a tour of the lock and dam. Considering all of the many times that we have visited this place; it is amazing that this is the first time that we took this tour. The tour pretty much boiled down to taking the freight elevator up to the overpass that spans the dam and watch a tug and its tow lock thru. It was three o’clock when the tour concluded, and Eagle Days was shutting down. More importantly, Just Desserts had closed for lunch, meaning we missed that.
This morning, the snowpocalypse looked more like a bust. Although the wind had howled, the chimes had sounded, and sleet could be heard falling all night long, there was very little snow to be seen in the morning. I was feeling like Charlie Brown and the football, but it soon got started. We may yet get a respectable snowfall out of this storm. I plan on finishing my long-neglected holiday cards today. With all of our guests departed and no miniature humans causing chaos everywhere, it seems like the perfect activity for a snowy day. Besides, I have yesterday’s announcement to add to the letter.
