Dave has found an apartment in D.C. It is in a great location, right across the street from the National Zoo, the third best zoo in the country (Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!), in easy walking distance to Rock Creek Park and about two miles from both Georgetown and his buddy Barrack’s place. He will be close to two stops on the red line, which he can take direct to work and back thus avoiding Washington’s notorious rush hour traffic. He’ll leave Rochester around the end of August come to Saint Louis for a bit and then be in D.C. in time for his mid-September start date. Anne is making arrangements to ship his stuff via a Pods type box.
According to Dan’s Facebook posts, California continues to offer him a warm reception. The high on Tuesday was 109 °F and it was already up to 103 °F on Wednesday. According to Dan’s Facebook post, “OK California, I get it. You can be hot too. You’ll never have St. Louis’ humidity though, so stop trying to compete, and get back to doing what you do best, being 70 °F all the time.” After we called Dave, we then called Dan too. School doesn’t start for him until after Labor Day, so he has had plenty of time to settle in and get adjusted. He helped Annie move into her apartment and the two of them drove down to San Diego to visit with their friend Cat. He still has Missouri gas in his car, so he hasn’t been doing all that much driving. Dan is finding cheaper, but probably better for you ways to eat out there, for example 19¢ per pound bananas at Trader Joe’s. Doesn’t the song go something like this …
Day-o, Day-ay-ay-o
Daylight come and me wan’ go home
Day, me say day, me say day, me say day
Me say day, me say day-ay-ay-o
Daylight come and me wan’ go home
Work all night on a drink a’ rum
Daylight come and me wan’ go home
Stack banana till the mornin’ come
Daylight come and me wan’ go home
Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana
Daylight come and me wan’ go home
Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana
Anne started school on Tuesday, in the second grade. You would think with three college degrees that she could have placed higher? Mrs. Hammer, Dan’s old third grade teacher who has retired and now substitute teaches also was there too. The temperature in Saint Louis now is nice, highs near eighty and lows in the sixties. Let’s hope that it lasts for a while. I continue to try to settle into my new assignment. My current job is a mission impossible, but I’ve been on those before and I know the drill: enthusiasm, disillusionment, panic, search for the guilty, punishment of the innocent and reward of the non-participants. At least the airplane business is doing well.
Um, I thought that song went something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWD7iw_1M0Q
A bit dated don’t you think?
