The poise, benign expression and gracefully draped robe with delicate floral trim attest to the high quality of this Buddha sculpture. The double protrusion of the skull, one over the forehead and one at the top, is typical of later Buddhist sculpture made from about 1300. A swastika is engraved on the Buddha’s chest, and the eight-spoked wheel of the law on his palms. In Buddhism, the swastika represents the curls on the Buddha’s chest and is a symbol of good fortune.
