Spotted Tussock Moth Caterpillar

Appearance: This caterpillar is distinctly marked with black and yellow bands, and features prominent tufts of black and white hairs, giving it a fuzzy or “tussock” appearance.
Habitat and Diet: They are commonly found across Canada and the western parts of the United States, extending south into the Appalachians. Their diet primarily consists of the leaves of various trees, including poplars, willows, alders, basswoods, birches, maples, and oaks.
Caution: While not considered poisonous, the hairs of the Spotted Tussock Moth caterpillar can cause skin irritation or a rash if touched, due to their barbed and bristly nature.
