Hexi Caihua Style Painted Doorway

This structure is a full-scale reconstruction of an Imperial Palace building from Beijing’s Forbidden City, located within the Royal Ontario Museum. It represents a corner of a large palace hall styled after the Qing dynasty (1644 – 1912). The building was assembled and painted by ten Chinese artisans from the National Museum of Chinese Architecture in Beijing in 2005.It features traditional architectural elements including intricate blue and green ceiling details and prominent red pillars.

This imagery features Hexi Caihua, a style of traditional Chinese imperial decorative painting found on major palace buildings. The design consists of intricate golden dragons set against vibrant blue and green backgrounds, creating a highly ornate pattern. It is commonly associated with significant historic sites in Beijing, such as the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace. The architecture utilizes a strict color palette including red, yellow, and blue, often reflecting historical philosophies regarding the five elements.
