Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Grafton Tyler Brown, 1886

GRAFTON TYLER BROWN American, 1841-1918 Grand Canyon, Yellowstone 1886 Oil on canvas Gift of Milton and Nancy Washington, 2012.92 Acquired by Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, by 1997; purchased by Milton and Nancy Washington, June 1997; donated, December 31, 2012. A self-taught artist, Grafton Tyler Brown was the first landscape painter in Victoria, British Columbia, and one of the first Black artists to depict the Pacific Northwest and California. After a successful career as a commercial cartographer and lithographer, he traveled extensively, painting canvases of iconic Western vistas. Brown is known for his luminous studio paintings rendered with clarity and precision. Though he maintained the analytical perspective of a draftsman in much of his work, he used a loose and expressive technique here. The artist applied more varied and textured brushstrokes to depict the sulfur-rich yellow soil and rugged terrain of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
