She is acutely attuned to the political and contradictory relationships among gender, culture, religion, and social codes that have informed the lives of women and immigrants historically and today. Medieval Persian and Turkish architecture, textiles, and miniature paintings inspired the precise, stylized floral forms that compose Agha’s sculpture of light and shadow. Women from orthodox families are often segregated in their homes in Pakistan and floral designs within the home provide an outlet for them to connect with nature. She describes this work as her effort to create a sense of how women can reclaim and safely open up private space to welcome others All the Flowers Are for Me offers an opportunity to reflect on the connections we share and the differences that make our community so vibrant. We invite you to tell your stories of how art has helped you to feel connected or to explore cultural differences.
