Back in the US! Back in the US! Back in the USSR! Yesterday, we drove 960 km (600 mi), from the Soo to New York. Things started off pleasantly enough, with a short and sweet visit with Canadian customs. We got a nice agent this time and we were soon on our way again. Unlike the last time that we crossed at the Soo on an early Sunday morning. That time we got a rather grumpy or maybe even hungover border guard, but enough about him. On our first leg we retraced a portion of the route of our epic bicycle trip of our youth. It was fun trying to remember places where we had stopped at over forty years ago. After that it became a bit of a slough. We know well enough not to drive south on a Sunday in Michigan. Apparently, the same truth holds for Ontario too. Go figure! As we continued south the traffic continued to worsen and our ETA kept slipping. Requests for updates from our prospective hosts mirrored our rising concerns about our arrival time. An hour wait at the US border did not help. We eventually pulled off I-90 at Rochester, just as the nightly roadwork crews were setting up. They held dinner for us and such a scrumptious dinner it was. They had a bed for us too. A lifelong friendship had been put to the test, but it held.
