Tired of Winning?

Il Mostro – 2017 Winner Trans-Superior Race

Anyone tired of winning yet? In 2016 Trump promised Americans, “We’re going to win so much, you’re going to be so sick and tired of winning.” We’ve certainly won the booby prize when it comes to handling the Coronavirus. More infections, more deaths than anyone else. This pandemic then precipitated the worse economic crisis since the Great Depression. We’re #1! We’re #1! Throw in some civil unrest, because some people don’t feel like being murder by cops anymore. But wait, there is more. California is on fire, enduring its worse fire season ever. Not one, but two hurricanes are scheduled to strike the US this week. Could a thing called climate change be at fault? Is that enough winning for you yet?

While for some, the laying of all of these calamities at the president’s feet might seem unfair. However, they have all occurred during his watch and many of them have been exacerbated by either his actions or inactions. He may not feel that he is responsible, but I am holding him accountable. To this laundry list of maladies let’s add one more, this week’s Republican convention. Although, it would be more accurate to describe it as the Trump convention. Half of the keynote speakers have Trump in their name and Trump is speaking on every night. He has hired the former reality show producer of The Apprentice, to produce this convention for him. How more unreal can you get then that?

Needless to say, I won’t be watching any part of it. I’ll wait for a suitably partisan recap of each night, the next morning. Still, even from afar, I will have to endure the week. After next week, it will be about two more months until election day. There will be four debates, but usually the first one is the most influential. Most people are kind of one and done with these things. There is the distinct chance of an October surprise. Nothing else this year has gone according to plan, why should this campaign be any different? Come Election Day, we will have already voted. Anne plans to work the polls as an Election Official. Even with the danger of Covid, she feels that it is her patriotic duty. Then there is the waiting of election night and probably dragging on into the week or weeks after that. I would be so pleased with a Biden landslide victory and have it over and done with quickly. That would not be too much winning for me.

  1. OMGWTFBBQ – I really don’t want to deal with the “Week of Trump Whining, Ranting, and Rallying”. I, too, will be glancing at the notably partisan pieces (basically, WaPo, CNN, NYT, …, y’know, all the “fake news” ) to get the gist of the “convention” (aka, it will take about 30 seconds/day to get that gist). Let us know if you hear much different from what is expected (such as: forcing an “emergency release” of the Astra Zeneca/Oxford vaccine – which Oxford Univ. has no interest in doing!);etc.
