Things that Go Click in the Night

Something was going click in the middle of the night, last night. This made for a rather sleepless night. Each sound was a single click and was separated from the next click by at least several seconds and they were somewhat irregular in timing. Once Anne turned on the light, to find the source of this sound, which silenced the sound for almost long enough to fall back asleep, but not quite. She determined that the source of the sound was not in my underwear basket. Yea! Now she suspects my clothes dresser. Boo! Since, I was wide awake at dawn, I went for a bike ride and got this rather nice photo. Originally, I was thinking rodent, but it is in a most unattractive corner of the house for those pests. Later, I Googled pests that make a clicking sound. I’m pretty sure that whatever we heard was not termites or a deathwatch beetle, but I have no idea what it could be. Our plan for tonight is to record the sound, so that we can replay it for experts. Anne went cycling today too, so we’ll probably both sleep soundly tonight and not hear a thing. Maybe, in addition to all our bicycle training, for our big tour this summer, this pest incident is also a form of training too, training for rustic cabin life.
