Happy Independence Day! On this day in 1776, our Continental Congress declared independence from England. I’ve been watching lately the HBO mini-series “John Adams”. In this series Adams receives a letter from his son, which complained about Congress and the declaration hadn’t even been made yet. Since then Independence Day has mostly devolved into to a summer time three-day weekend. A few traditions persist though. I biked over to Brimley to watch the one o’clock parade. You were either in the parade or were watching it. It was suggested that I should have been in it too, but I’m too shy and retiring for any of that. I was amaze at the large number of fire protection vehicles in the parade. There were easily over a dozen of them. At the annual 4th of July picnic, I learned that the local Chippewa casinos contribute 2% of their revenues to local municipalities, which explains the large number of fire engines in the parade. The Statue of Liberty figure is a retired librarian from town. Maybe there will be fireworks tonight?
