While I was paling around with Jay and Carl on my layover weekend in Seattle, on Sunday, we first went to the Seattle Art Museum and then after lunch, we walked over to the Olympic Sculpture Park. Olympic Sculpture Park is a public park that opened in 2007. The park consists of a 9-acre outdoor sculpture museum and beach. This park also almost overlooked Hempfest. You could glimpse the festival grounds through the trees. Hempfest has been an annual event in Seattle, for at least a few years, but this is the first year since marijuana was legalized. The sculpture park was surrounded on three sides by the mile long snaking line to get in to this event. The above floating billboard was trolling the waters just offshore from Hempfest, advertising future marijuana related events. On our way back up the hill to the car from the sculpture park, we encountered two young entrepreneurs who were selling cans of ‘pop’ for $10 and then throwing in a complementary joint. It is legal to own marijuana, but not yet legal to buy or sell it.
Upon returning to Saint Louis, I received the following forwarded email. It warns of an unsuspected, but potential danger. I get these routinely. Usually they apply to potential terrorist or espionage threats and not food stuffs:
Good Afternoon Commanders and First Sergeants,
I’m sending this email to inform you of a food item that needs to be avoided called Chobani Greek Yogurt. It contains Hemp Seeds which according to AFI 44-121, para. 3.2.2., studies have shown that products made with hemp seed and hemp seed oil may contain varying levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), an active ingredient of marijuana which is detectable under the Air Force Drug Testing Program. In order to ensure military readiness, the ingestion of products containing or products derived from hemp seed or hemp seed oil is prohibited. Failure by military personnel to comply with the prohibition on the ingestion of products containing or products derived from hemp seed or hemp seed oil is a violation of Article 92, Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).” Please pass this information on to your personnel so they can avoid getting a potential positive drug use for THC.
Further internet research revealed that only certain flavors of Chobani yogurt contain hemp. One such flavor is Blueberry Power Flip. This product is half yogurt and half various grains. It can be mixed to make a yogurt and cereal mix. Anne had asked me to pick her up some yogurt for lunch today. She also asked me if I was going to purchase Chobani yogurt. I did, but I did not buy the Blueberry Power Flip variety. It was already sold out.
