Fire in the Sky

The fires in northern Saskatchewan are bringing smoke down through the Great Lakes. Saturday afternoon saw Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups readings over Lake Superior and the Upper Michigan Peninsula. A layer of smoke aloft from forest fires in Canada will continue to move across Lake Superior and through most of western and central Upper Michigan Saturday afternoon. This layer of smoke could reduce visibilities at times and could cause some problems for people with respiratory problems. “This phenomena has been happening pretty regularly the last couple years where there’s been big fires up in Canada,” said the National Weather Service. “Smoke comes down off of northwest winds which is typical for this time of year and then we get the smoke from that.” If the smoke smell is particularly strong, stay indoors and close windows.
